Best time to send money to Pakistan from the UK
There is no magic day of the week to send money from the UK to Pakistan, but there are three things you can control: the rate you convert at, the fee you pay, and whether the transfer lands on a Pakistani banking day. Getting those three right is worth more than trying to time the rupee.
The rate that matters is the open-market rate
UK remitters quote you a GBP/PKR rate that tracks the open market, not the State Bank interbank rate. The gap between the two is usually small but widens whenever the rupee is under pressure, and that gap is the single biggest variable in what your family receives.
Compare the delivered amount, not the advertised rate. A provider showing a headline rate with a £0 fee can still deliver less than one charging £2.99 on a tighter spread. Enter the same amount into two apps and read the PKR figure at the bottom.
Timing within the week and the day
Pakistani banks settle Monday to Friday and close on public holidays. A Friday evening UK transfer often does not credit until Monday morning in Pakistan, and the rate is normally locked when your provider processes it, not when you tap send.
If you are sending because a gold purchase is imminent, send early in the Pakistani week. The Sarafa board is posted mid-morning PKT, and cash in the account before the board is posted is what lets a family act on a good rate rather than watch it.
Seasonality: Ramadan, Eid and wedding season
Remittances into Pakistan rise sharply before Ramadan and Eid, and again through the winter wedding months. Higher volume does not usually improve your rate, but promotional pricing from UK remitters clusters around those weeks, and fee waivers are common.
Wedding-season demand also lifts the local gold premium in Pakistani markets. If the purchase is jewellery rather than cash support, sending earlier and buying outside the December-to-February peak often saves more than any FX edge.
Use the regulated channel
Send through an FCA-authorised firm or a UK bank. The Financial Conduct Authority register lets you check any provider in under a minute, and using an unregistered hawala channel to save a fraction of a percent leaves you with no recourse and can create tax and money-laundering exposure at both ends.
Pakistan's own scheme for non-resident Pakistanis, the Roshan Digital Account, is a bank account rather than a remittance product. It is worth understanding separately if you regularly hold rupees rather than sending and spending them immediately.
