Pakistan gold rate history in US dollars

The dollar is on both sides of the Pakistani gold price. International spot is quoted in dollars per ounce, and the rupee conversion is a dollar rate. Charting the Pakistani tola price in dollars therefore isolates the local premium and the metal, and removes the rupee's own decline.

Why the rupee chart overstates the move

A rising rupee gold price can mean gold rose, or it can mean the rupee fell. Over the past decade both happened, and the rupee contribution has often been the larger of the two.

In dollar terms the Pakistani tola price tracks international spot plus a fairly stable local premium. When the dollar series diverges from spot, the premium is what changed — usually import friction or local demand.

These figures convert the Karachi Sarafa 24K tola board rate at the open-market USD/PKR rate. They are indicative conversions, not a US market price.

For a US buyer the practical use is comparison: dollar-per-tola in Pakistan against dollar-per-gram at a US jeweller, once you adjust for purity.

Frequently asked questions

Is Pakistani gold cheaper than US gold in dollar terms?

For jewellery, usually, because US retail carries higher margins and sales tax, and mainstream US jewellery is 14K rather than 22K. For bullion the gap narrows sharply.

Why does the dollar series look flatter than the rupee series?

Because the rupee series includes currency depreciation and the dollar series does not.

Which USD/PKR rate is used?

The open-market rate, the same one used in the published tola formula.
